Ford, Tom
Fashion Designer
Tom Ford has redefined the role of fashion designer. No longer a troubled artist, the new paradigm is at ease with the commercial aims of large fashion companies, as brilliant at brand rejuvenation and marketing strategies as he is at design. Born in Austin, Texas in 1961, Tom Ford enrolled on an art history course at New York University. Hanging out at both Studio 54 and Warhol’s Factory, he eventually transferred to Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris, studying architecture, but by the end of the course Ford had realised that he wanted to work in fashion. In 1986, back in New York, he joined the design studio of Cathy Hardwick, moving to Perry Ellis two years later as design director. In 1990, Ford became womenswear designer at Gucci, the Italian accessories company which had been ailing since its ‘60s heyday. In 1994, Ford was made creative director at Gucci and the following March showed a landmark collection. Almost overnight, Gucci became a byword for desirability, offering the most aspirational and hedonistic kind of fashion. Since January 2000, when the Gucci Group purchased Yves Saint Laurent, Ford has designed menswear and womenswear for Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche. Tom Ford has received dozens of industry awards, including three from the prestigious CFDA; in 2002, the Council named him Accessory Designer of the Year for his work at YSL. Tom Ford served as creative director of the Gucci Group and was made Vice Chairman of the Management Board of Gucci Group. In April 2004, he resigned from his post at Gucci Group following a buyout by Pinault Printemps Redoute. Exactly one year later, he announced the creation of the Tom Ford brand. His collections include menswear, accessories and beauty products. In 2007 he opened his first retail store in New York at 845 Madison Avenue.
