Fendi, Maria Silvia Venturini
Fashion Designer
The Fendi empire was founded in 1925 by Adele Fendi from a small leather goods shop and workroom in Rome, where she and her husband Eduardo worked with private clients. Adele died in 1978 and each sister inherited a corner of the empire to look after, injecting the little company with their youthful glamour and spirit. Paola (born 1931) did the furs, Anna (born 1933) the leather goods, Franca (born 1935) customer relations, Carla (born 1937) the business coordination and Alda (born 1940) the sales. By the end of the ‘80s, the label had become synonymous with jet-set elitist luxury thanks to its furs and double F logo. In the ‘90s climate of anti-bourgeois political correctness, Fendi returned to its heritage defining the craze for baroque excess. In 1999, LVMH and Prada bought a 51 percent stake in the label; LVMH eventually becoming the sole partner in 2001. Maria Silvia Venturini Fendi, daughter of Anna Fendi, who created the Fendissime line in 1987 and is now the designer of accessories and menswear. Karl Lagerfeld, as chief designer, continues to work with the sisters as he has done since 1965.
