Back, Ann-Sofie
Fashion Designer

Ann-Sofie Back, who was born in Sweden in 1971, is one of the most subversive fashion designers working in London today. She is also one of the city's most promising. At her catwalk shows she eschews the perfect beauty of professional models in favour of quirky-looking friends and acquaintances. Back is also fascinated by mediocrity, which she attributes to her youth in Stenhamra, a particularly nondescript suburb of Stockholm. Following a BA in fashion design at Beckman's College of Design in Sweden, Back moved to London to study at Central Saint Martins, completing the fashion MA course in 1998. She then worked as a designer for Joe Casely-Hayford in London and various brands in Sweden while also styling fashion shoots for magazines including Self Service and Purple. She also styled the Spring/Summer 2001 campaign for Miu Miu. In October 2001 she launched her own label with a show at the Purple Institute in Paris and after four seasons in France, moved her show to London Fashion Week; in 2005 she was accepted onto the official show schedule. Back has numerous stockists in Japan and a string of other high-profile stores around the world. In 2005 she introduced a second, more casual line, called 'BACK'. Her work has also been included in numerous exhibitions, including the 'Reshape' show at the 2003 Venice Biennale.
