Willhelm, Bernhard
Fashion Designer

While still studying at Antwerp’s Royal Academy, Bernhard Willhelm (born 1972) already knew how to get to grips with his vocation. Trading in holidays for apprenticeships, he spent his summers working for Vivienne Westwood, Walter Van Beirendonck, Alexander McQueen and Dirk Bikkembergs. After graduating in 1998, Willhelm set up office in Antwerp, presenting his first womenswear collection in Paris a mere eight months later. What really sets him apart is his ‘anything goes as long as it’s beautiful’ approach: subsequent collections have seen him working collage-style with checks, polka-dots, tapestry, handmade knits, lace, dinosaur and cookbook prints, ruffled tutus, kimono dresses and much, much more. For Spring-Summer 2001, he introduced a series of menswear items, completing the existing range of womenswear and accessories. Willhelm guest-curated Antwerp fashion magazine ‘N°B’ (issue 2, February 2002), commissioning work by artists like Wolfgang Tillmans, Luc Tuymans and Attila Richard Lukacs, as well as poetry by Elfriede Jelinek and excerpts from texts written by the Dalai Lama, his personal hero. Willhelm has also posed naked for ‘Butt’ magazine. Proving he wasn’t a one-trick show pony, in 2002, along with the support from Tara Subkoff of Imitation of Christ and Sybilla, Willhelm enrolled as head designer at Roman couture brand Capucci. He instantly re-invigorated the house, giving edge, sporty energy and a refined touch to the label. With a newly realised shoe line and capsule collections for Yoox.com, Bernhard Willhelm is one of fashion’s true gems. Bernhard's exhibition opened at MoMu fashion museum in Antwerp in July 2007.
