Van Saene, Dirk
Fashion Designer

As part of the original ‘Antwerp Six’, Dirk Van Saene (born 1959) always set out to do his own thing, even if that meant both ignoring prevailing trends and refusing to play it safe by sticking to a signature style. After graduating from Antwerp’s Royal Academy in 1981, Van Saene went against the grain by opening a small shop, Beauties And Heroes, selling his own homemade clothes. Two years later he won the gold award at Belgium’s prestigious Golden Spindle contest. In 1987 he took part in the now-legendary ‘Antwerp Six’ presentation at the British Designer Show; three years later, he staged his first catwalk show in Paris. Over the years he has also drawn inspiration from the fine arts, citing the work of Louise Bourgeois, Ellsworth Kelly and Diane Arbus as starting points for various collections. Always a great admirer of classic couture, Van Saene accepted the invitation to curate a Coco Chanel exhibition in Antwerp in 2001, part of the acclaimed fashion project ‘Mode-Landed’.
