Philo, Phoebe
Fashion Designer
Until early 2001, Phoebe Philo was known as Stella McCartney’s design assistant and best buddy, an inspiring deputy who helped McCartney make her mark at the Parisian house. Philo has a particular talent for translating her own idiosyncratic personal style into instantly desirable - and therefore sell-out - fashion, moving with ease between street culture and high glamour. Born in Paris in 1973, Philo grew up in London and studied fashion at Central St Martins graduating in 1996. McCartney was in the year above her at college and the two became friends. When McCartney was headhunted for Chloe by the Richemont Group in 1997, she asked her new bosses to allow Philo to join her in Paris. So successful were the duo that when McCartney departed Chloe in April 2001, her assistant was named as successor. In October 2001, Philo made her debut as chief designer, her first solo show since her graduation presentation. The transition was judged a runaway success, with the now-hallmark narrow trousers and playfully-detailed blouses still drawing Chloe’s young customers into 270 outlets worldwide. She picked up a British Designer of the Year prize in 2004. In January 2006, Philo resigned as creative director of Chloe. She is married to the London art gallery-owner Max Wigram and is expecting her second child.
