Smile i-D Book
Published by Taschen

i-D continues to celebrate the art of fashion and style
with an exhibition highlighting the spirit of the magazine - a blend of fashion and social documentation, it captures the innovation that has brought i-D to the forefront of contemporary fashion and culture. SMILEi-D. The first opened in London in 2001 and continued to circumnavigate the world stopping off in Milan, New York, Tokyo, Paris, Mexico City, Caracas, Santiago, Buenos Aires and Moscow.
Spanning the fashion of the streets, catwalks and clubs, SMILEi-D reminds us of the models, musicians, artists and designers from around the world who appeared in i-D before most knew who they were.

This multimedia installation incorporates many images from the pages of
i-D, most notably i-D's signature 'straight-ups', head to toe shots of people looking good in their clothes, along with memorable coversincluding Madonna, Sade, Bjork, Naomi, Kate and Gisele. Combining pivotal visuals, video projections and graphics, SMILEi-D travels through 20 years of i-D history from 1980 to 2000. Alongside SMILEi-D, a 600-page retrospective entitled SMILEi-D - Fashion and Style: The Best from 20 years of i-D was published by Taschen in April 2001. It incorporates covers and spreads from the first 200 issues of the magazine. As Terry Jones explains,“A cross between a menu and a diary, SMILEi-D maps the magazine’s journey beyond the veneer of regular fashion.” To purchase a copy click the red button on this page.
